About Makedemy

Makedemy (short form for Maker Academy) is a Maker Education Company that conceptualises, design and implement learning experiences where students can grow through hands-on making. Making is Thinking and we believe that this is a better way of learning in the 21st century.

Our Vision

To create a sense of agency within every young person by promoting the purposeful maker mindset.

How?

We seek to promote the purposeful maker mindset by remodelling the methods (i.e. open sharing), tools (i.e. digital fabrication) and environments (i.e. makerspaces) of the maker movement in the form of Maker Education.

WHAT IS MAKING: Making, the act of putting things together to create something tangible, is an invitation to turn ideas into reality. From the early days of woodworking and power tools, we have today a much wider variety of skills and technologies (e.g. 3D Printing, Virtual Reality and amongst others) made available, affordable and accessible for us to start getting our hands dirty.

WHAT IS MAKER EDUCATION: Maker Education (Maker Ed) is learning through hands-on creation. It is through the consistent practise of hands-on making and solving challenges that values and philosophies can be cultivated among the young. At Makedemy, we nurture values including Growth Mindset, Craftsmanship and Open Sharing to help prepare a child in a world that is increasingly uncertain.

While it is closely associated with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics), we believe that Maker Ed is much more because making could involve cross disciplinary needs that are beyond the definition of STEAM.

Maker Mindset

Growth Mindset

A Maker is someone who believes he and she can learn to do anything.

Craftsmanship

A Maker is someone who has excellent work ethic and maintains the highest standards for themselves even when no one is looking.

Open Sharing

A Maker is someone who is willing to share their ideas and build upon the idea of others to achieve collective brilliance.

A Worthy Cause

Young people are growing in an increasingly complex and fast-changing world with truly staggering sustainability challenges. Man-made environmental disaster, massive unemployment, natural resource shortages, severe income inequality are what our young people are going to be facing. Such challenges can even have strongest of us waver and create a feeling of helplessness.

We need courage – which derives from having a sense of agency – and realize that we have the capacity to act and heal the world.

Our belief is that the mindset of a purposeful maker offers the best pathway to develop a young person’s sense of agency.

We are Makers

Not only that, we love teaching and sharing what we have made. We geek out at new technologies, constantly find way to apply them and solve complex problems. Our diverse backgrounds span Social Work, Engineering, Design, Law and Science, and we became Makers from our love of the hands on. We love making and we have a feeling, you will love it too.
